Originating in 1978 from a teaching group spearheaded by Prof. SHEN Daming and FENG Datong, UIBE Law School has maintained a record of academic excellence and of influence on practice in the area of international business law. It was also in 1978, that the first group of Master of Law students were enrolled at UIBE, majoring in international business law. Quite a lot of them later became pioneers in legal and business fields, represented by Dr. GAO Xiqing, former CEO of China Investment Corporation (China’s sovereign fund established in 2007). 

In 1984, the UIBE established the Department of International Economic Law, making itself one of China’s first four institutions in 1980s that had been permitted by the Ministry of Education to enroll Ph.D. students in International Economic Law. This showcases UIBE Law’s prestige in its early days.

Later in 1996, to meet China’s increasing demand for the talents in international law, UIBE founded the Law School on the basis of then Department of International Economic Law. Thus far, UIBE Law School has experienced over three decades of development and well established itself as the leader of China’s advanced legal education in international economic law.

Our over sixty full-time faculty members exhibit a depth and range of experience to this School, and offer nearly upper-level courses on a series of topics ranging from international business law, WTO law, comparative law to financial law, insurance law, securities regulation, competition law and environment law, from intellectual property, torts, contract law, bankruptcy law to criminal law, etc.

Our faculty members are frequently assigned national key research projects and granted research funds of all kinds by multi-level agencies, including but not limited to government authority, enterprises, NGOs and industry associations. In this way, UIBE Law School contributes its path breaking scholarship to China’s policy-making on international economic and trade issues, negotiations of international trade and investment treaties, better regulation of financial markets, as well as a more effective national legal system.

UIBE Law School is strongly committed to offering our students essential knowledge in learning about domestic and international legal market. The School’s fourteen (14) core courses required for undergraduates lay firm foundation for their pursuing more advanced programs in a particular field, such as international economic law, competition law, intellectual property law, etc.

Latest curricular overhaul aims to keep pace with rapid progress - both local and global - in law, economy and technology. We also offer inter-university initiatives, including joint degree programs and studying-abroad opportunities. Moreover, we teach students to understand law from the perspective of its interaction with public policy, economic reality, information technology, social demand, etc. We also urge students to pursue legal profession for serving the society, and nurture their spirit of public service. As a result, our alumni include lawyers of world-class law firms, legal counsels of multinational corporations and non-profit organizations, government officials at all levels, as well as scholars in academia.

In short, excellence, innovation, a devotion to legal community, as well as a commitment to the future — all these are UIBE Law School’s legacy to each new generation of law students and legal professionals.
